Happy New Year, y’all. As per usual, I spent 2014 picking at a buffet of distractions – some of which were delicious, others gave me roaring cultural indigestion. Not every dish was prepared last year, but they all found their way onto my plate in the last twelve months.
The Good: ‘Gravity’
A double-hander set in Earth’s orbit was always going to demand an outstanding cast and truly breathtaking special effects. Fortunately they gave us George and Sandra, and surrounded them with an eye-popping new standard in 3D CGI.
Honourable mention: ‘The Lego Movie’ – so hilarious, it must have been made for the adults.
The Bad: ‘Interstellar’
If you’re going to re-make ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’, at least be honest enough to acknowledge the fact. Pretentious, dull and boasting some devastatingly terrible writing, ‘Interstellar’ made for a very clunky and trying three hours.
Dishonourable mention: I couldn’t really get excited by ‘Avengers Assemble’, much to my regret. Can’t stand all that Asgard stuff.
