Dear The Rocking Vicar,
Have just read through the ‘Worst of 2013’ list on the Rocking Vicar website and heartily agree with the vast majority. It has entertained me on a dull day at work, when time seems to stop and the chances of the little hand reaching the number five on the clock, seem as unlikely as England ever regaining The Ashes.
The Dr Who scripts is a point I especially agree with. What ever happened to writing a simple sci-fi story? I watched the original Star Wars film with my five year old nephew last night and he was transfixed by the characters and story, which he didn’t appear to have any problems in following.
I really think Steven Moffatt should have resigned when Matt Smith did, or should maybe watch Star Wars again or revisit an episode of the re-imagined Battlestar Galactica (currently repeating on Pick TV on Monday nights).
The brief appearance of Peter Capaldi, was the only highlight in the Dr Who Christmas Special; overblown, pompous, overbearing incidental music (as usual) and ultimately boring, as we watched The Doctor grow old in a town called Christmas, which in itself was just thrown in as it was a Christmas special!
To just be handed a new set of regeneration cycles by the Time Lords was a throw away moment and one that could have been handled a lot more imaginatively! The past three Christmas specials have been average at most, as have the series, which you quite rightly point out have complicated scripts (I struggled to follow some of them) and a whiff of pretension.
I do hope for better things with Peter Capaldi, but fear he will have to wrestle with poor scripts as Sylvester McCoy did before the show was taken off air. His portrayal of The Doctor was actually okay, his biggest enemy was his scripts and I fear the show could be heading the same way, which would be a great shame.
It would be great to hear a brief discussion on the state of Dr Who on a future podcast perhaps. We need better stories such as:
Dr Who And The Attack Of The Onesies
The Deadly Daily Mail Assassin
The Curse Of Boris
The Hand Of F***** Fear
Thank you again for your excellent 2013 worst of list and it’s refreshing to hear someone in the media, speak out at last about the state of Doctor Who.
